Shootout
By Rupert Hitzig

It was 1994

Mickey Rooney, Ben Johnson, Randy Travis, Ned Beatty, Larry Gatlin, Gloria
De Haven and Ernest Borgnine were all in a western called Outlaws: The
Legend of OB Taggert. It was shot on a western Street just outside of Santa
Fe, and I was directing, but when I took the assignment, I didn’t really know
what I was in for.

The script was written by Mick, and he didn’t look fondly on criticism, or
changes. The cast was there out of respect for the great song and dance
man, and not because they were challenged by the roles. The budget was
tight, and the shooting schedule short. Ben Johnson was old and shaky,
Mickey was cranky and difficult, Gloria was as frail as a buttercup, Travis
never stopped singing, or swinging his six guns in fast draw, Larry Gatlin
was having an affair on set, Ned Beatty walked alone in the hills between
takes, and Ernest Borgnine walked through his takes and then took off for
the art galleries.

Smellies
By Debbie Jhoon

"Smells are surer than sights and sounds to make your heart-strings crack."
— Rudyard Kipling

That being said here is what I heard in my all girls Jew high school. “Ew it
stinks in here, Shabnam close your legs” “Kelly would it kill you to be nice
to me?” “I don’t know? Would it kill you to take a shower?

Now here’s the thing it did stink in the classroom and it was coming from
betwixt shabnams legs. Oh shabnam, so fresh off the boat yet so not so
fresh in your lady boat.

When I first arrived to the Americas in the early 80s with many other
Persians one thing was clear the white Jew kids were not having it. And
the easiest ostracizing comments were about the smell. The Persian smell.
Whenever it smelled bad, people would always look at the fat kid or the
foreign one now seeing as how I was both fat and foreign I always got the
looks. Fortunately I didn’t smell cuz of good hygiene and even stronger
longing to fit in gene.
