The Valton's Inn

"...mum where's me socks?! - mum is food ready, I'm hungry! - mum can you
move I can't see the TV! ...mum I have an headache can you make me lemon
tea please..."
My poor mum, I don't know how she ever did it, raise eight kids! I was the
youngest and the only girl, talk about living in a man's world. We all lived in
a small 3 bedroom house in the north of England. Actually, it was a 2
bedroom, but we made the back room into a bedroom at night. It was like a
backpackers hostel, my brothers ate all the food, left their mess
everywhere and had farting contests before bedtime. Remember that show
The Walton's? Well, we were like them, but Indian, we were 'The Valton's'...
"Good night Ranjeet... good night Sanjeet... 'night Manjeet (yawn)...
Preetesh... Zitesh... Manesh... Bidesh (snore)"
Oh I loved that show, watched it every Sunday morning!

Gender Bender Accident

"Honey, I had a car accident and I'm at Lenox Hill Hospital," was the phone
message I'd come home to one day after work. I called the hospital, and
spoke to my groggy, soon-to-be ex-husband, (if he'd stop contesting the
divorce). I visited him the following day.
On the best of days, Rupert was a soulful sad faced Germanic cherub
resembling Peter Lorre. Seeing him at the hospital was like a scene from a
John Waters film sans the popcorn. I expected a swollen face, legs in
traction. Someone who looked more like Oliver Hardy in a piano moving
mishap, instead of Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot. But Rupert looked like
a transvestite the morning after a drinking binge. He was wearing a
woman's ratty pink chenille robe and was unscarred. His middle two fingers
on his left hand were bandaged in a splint, resembling a penis in a cast. He
looked laughably off balance and I clasped my hand over my mouth to hide
my smirk. But he was trussed up in a hospital bed, so I tried to force some
concern.
